Foreword
Joerg Kijanski President German Carrom Federation
When Arif called me in August 2014 and asked me to write a message for his book Relation with International Carrom, I was highly moved. Not for the foreword, which he wanted from me, but for the fact that Arif wanted to look back to his long and energetic Carrom life. The text books on Carrom for beginers and advance players are available in many languages, but a biography of a Carrom player is new. Though I must mention that here it is not a memoir of any normal Carrom player but of an extraordinary Carrom player. Nobody has done throughout the world so much for spreading and promotion of the game of Carrom. For decades Arif devoted his life to this fascinating game as his own game and travelled countless kilometers between Asia and Europe. No one can imagine how many times he has gone round the world. Recently Arif has celebrated his 80th birthday - and as a President of the World federation the International Carrom Federation he is active all over the world.
His work started in East Germany, the former German Democratic Republic, where he founded the Carrom Sports Federtion, one of the first federations in Europe. At the Second Congress of the International Carrom Federation in 1991 in Male Arif represented the interests of the East Germans as well as the interests of the West German federation (G.C.F.), since no representative of the (western) German Carrom Federation (G.C.F.) could take part in it. In the following years Arif became the President of the whole German Carrom Federation (G.C.F.) and continued his office for more than ten years. So far nobody had been before or until now for such a long period on this post. He was also founding President of the European Carrom Confederation and is President of the International Carrom Federation. One may think that here for some times several posts were carried together and there were perhaps different interests. Not always, inspite of the connection of sports and international friendship, were the opinions of Europeans and Asians the same. Arif could mediate in such situations souvereign and found colectively the solutions and finally implemented them.
All three existing federations- the G.C.F., E.C.C. and I.C.F. are grateful to Arif more than one can imagine today. Perhaps one would be able to judge in coming years how valuable his contributions are. The fact is that without the unprecedented efforts of Arif the history and development of Carrom, particularly in Germany and Europe, would have been different. That the G.C.F. has for years the largest membership in Europe, is also a contribution of Arif. And when today the new federations are established all over Europe, such as in Poland, Sweden, Spain or for example in Czech Republic, so we can say it surely, that also here Arif had his hands. That he, at the same time, finds time to write poems and plays in his mother tongue Urdu is to some extent astonishing, because he has also a family and a big circle of friends. With the selfless support , particularly from his wife Ingrid and the rest of the family, he would have hardly the possiblity for such kind of intensive engagement and fulfilment of hobby, which is very often forgotten.
I myself had met and appreciated Arif long before in the G.C.F.. He was not only my predecessor on the post of President, but always one of my most important contact partner, which he is even today. A nice friend, whom I - and certainly all Carrom loving people in the world wish whole heartedly a long future. To all readers of this book, I wish stimulating, informative and interesting reading.

Preface
From author's pen
There are many theories about the origin of the game of Carrom. Some people like to relate it to China, the others with Egypt and Yemen etc. But nobody has seriously researched on it. Nor any university ever bothered to assign this task to any scholar. Even we in the ICF have not found any one who could take up this serious responsibility. I wish that in near future some young scholar will come forward to trace the history of Carrom and enrich our knowledge, which is not only important for us, but for the entire sports community in the world.
I personally presume that this interesting game was originated in Indian sub-continent from the combination of the ancient board games and the modern European billiard. Billiard was confined to aristocracy as attraction in Gymkhanas, officers clubs, and rich palaces. But the intelligence of common men adopted billiard according to their own conditions and traditions in such a way that the game of Carrom developed. It had all the qualities of billiard, but was simple and suited to the conditions of the poor people in the sub-continent. For more than one hundred years this game remained confined to the poor people's localities and huts, without proper training and tournaments. Their clubs, if there were any, looked shabby and without proper equipments, although there were excellent players among them. But they were not recognised in the society. Among the rich families, the carrom boards were presented to the children for fun, but they were not allowed to spend much time on it. The parents were scared that Carrom will spoil their children and harm their studies. As if it was untouchable for the fine families, just as many other folk sports and arts were neglected in the society, whose fate was opened after the freedom of the continent from the colonial rule.

"The first major toy which we presented to our children was a Carrom Board." Said a prominent film actress of India Mrs. Jaya Bachchan, when I accompanied her for about five hours journey from Berlin to Gera (East Germany), where she was going to attend an International Children Film Festival as a member of jury.
_____________________________________________
During the past six decades like many folk arts and games Carrom has also been able to get considerable recognition in the society not only in the sub-continent but also around the globe. More and more people recognize its social importance. In countries like India, Sri Lanka, Maldives and to some extent in Bangladesh and Malaysia it is recognized in official circles and receives partial state support. Newspapers and electronic media also gives more coverage to Carrom activities. Many recognized Carrom players have been able to get good jobs in big firms in India and Sri Lanka.
As in India and Sri Lanka after the formations of the national Carrom federations in 1956 and 1958 many new Carrom players and Carrom lovers were inspired to form large number of clubs and associations, the formation of the International Carrom Federation on 15th October 1988 at Madras (Chennai) inspired Carrom players in many parts of the world. In Europe along with Switzerland and both parts of Germany Carrom federations/associations and clubs were formed in Netherlands, U.K., Italy, France, Sweden, Poland, Czech Republic and Spain. They organise their national and regional tournaments and other promotional activities. In summer 1991 the 2nd. Congress of the International Carrom Federation, where I represented the Carrom federations of both parts of Germany, entrusted me the task to organize as convenor a confederation of Carrom in Europe. The first Consultative meeting was held on 22nd. September 1991 in Berlin, a day after the Euro Cup in which the representatives of both parts of Germany, Netherlands and newly formed U.K.Carrom Federation participated.
The meeting endorsed the decision of the ICF and decided to continue consultations in this direction. On 16th August 1996 the European Carrom Confederation was established at a meeting in Unter Ehrendingen, Switzerland. I was elected unanimously as President of the ECC, while Krishan Sharma (U.K.) took over as Secretary General, Elisa Martinelli (Italy) as Assistant Secretary and Uelli Plus (Switzerland) as Treasurer of the ECC. Since then regular Euro Cup Carrom tournaments are organized every year. Similarly in Asia the Carrom tournaments and other activities are organized by Carrom federations/associations and clubs in India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Maldives, Bangladesh, Malaysia, Japan, Korea, Emirates and Nepal etc. Since the formation of the Asian Carrom Confederation regular SAARC countries Championships have been organised in different countries and now Asian Championships are also taking place. In USA there is a very strong Carrom federation which is organizing national and regional tourneaments. Now with the emergence of a strong Carrom federation in Canada this game has got new strength in North America. While Carrom activities have also started in some countries of South America and Africa. Many international Carrom tournaments have been organized in countries like Germany, India, Sri Lanka, U.K., U.S.A., France, Malaysia. A remarkable development I noticed in recent years in Poland, where large number of school boys and girls are taking interest in Carrom. The coming 4th Carrom World Cup 13th to 17th September 2014 in Maldives is a proof of the growing popularity of the game and the strength of I.C.F. . With seventeen countries registered for the World Cup 2014 will be the highest number of countries taking part in any Carrom tournament. A fact which gives us much optimism and faith.
